Ipe
(Brazilian Walnut)
S4S Eased Edge 1x4, 5/4x4, 5/4x6
This Brazilian species is one of
the most stable of all the tropical hardwoods. It dries
extremely well with little checking, twisting, or bow. It is
widely recognized for its strength and natural resistance to
decay. It can be used in ground contact applications without
preservatives or additional treatments. The Forest Products
Laboratory rates untreated Ipe hardwood, which is native to
South America, as having an expected lifespan of 30 years or
more. Widely used in commercial exterior construction such as
boardwalks, piers, and benches it has recently become a
popular choice for residential decks due to its low
maintenance, attractive color, and extremely smooth surface
that withstands the test of time. It is a heavy timber,
weighing approximately 6 lbs. per
board foot with a 12% to 14% moisture content,
generally sinks in water, and has a fire rating of
Class 1 UBC (uniform building
code), the same as concrete or steel.
The strength rating (PSI) of Ipe is twice that of Oak, three
times that of Cedar or Redwood, and ten times that of
plastic. Janka
